Introduction to Pylon Racing Weekend

Hosted by Capricorn Radio Control Aviators Club and Queensland Model Aircraft Racing Association

Event Schedule

  • Saturday Morning:
    • Demonstration & Instructional flights.
    • Presentation on racing classes, rules, and procedures for pilots, callers, and judges.
    • Club members can fly between pylon flights.
  • Lunch – Catering by CRCAC members.
  • Saturday Afternoon:
    • Open field for demonstration, instructional flights, and racing with pylon 1 lights.

 

  • Sunday Morning to Midday:
  • Breakfast – Catering by CRCAC members.
    • Informal racing featuring pylon lights and timing system.

Who can attend

Anyone interested in the unique RC experience of navigating a Pylon course and racing against the clock; or just come along for a look.  Flyers will need MAAA membership.

Aircraft Types

Bring electric or IC aircraft – small or large, fast or slow! QMARA members will showcase various racing aircraft, with a focus on introductory-class electric (E2K) and IC (Q500) aircraft.

  • E2K Class – Affordable, 3D-printed models designed in Queensland in late 2023
    • Over 60 aircraft now flying across Australia, with print files shared to over 90 pilots worldwide.
    • Specs: 300 sq-inch plank style wing with a simple fuselage, powered by a 4-cell 2200mah battery, RPM limited ESC, and a standard APC ic 8×8 prop – capable of speeds up to 170km/h
  • Q500 Class – Conventional or Composite aircraft.
    • Specs: 500 sq-inch layout powered by a standard .46-size OS/Thunder Tiger engines with APC 10×8 prop.
    • Runs on standard 4:1 methanol/castor fuel mix, slightly higher speeds than E2K.
