MAAQ Committee Christmas Message

The MAAQ committee wish all our members and families all the best for the festive season and here’s to a great year of flying in 2023.

You would have seen from our recent communications there are a number of new initiatives being rolled out soon to support our clubs into the future.  The new membership system (Member Jungle) will replace our old member database and will eventually provide for a complete online / self-service app for your membership.  The AVCRM system will provide an online portal for lodgement, tracking and managing your clubs Area Approval/s.

The MAAQ committee are working to make sure we are ready and are well equipped to support our clubs with the new systems and processes.  We will be communicating regularly in the lead up to any changes and the best thing you and your club can do to ensure you are prepared is to read our communications and be sure the club representatives attend the MAAQ meetings

Happy landings.

Regards,
Mick Dallmann
MAAQ President

Recovering a Lost Aircraft
Have you ever been in a situation where the last thing you see is your beautifully balanced aircraft heading over the top of the trees and not responding to your transmitter?  Redlands Aero Modellers created a guide for their members on the fundamentals of recovering a lost aircraft which is worth a read.

Area Approvals
Did you know all MAAA clubs by default can fly model aircraft up to 400ft above ground level (AGL).  If a club wishes to fly higher than this they need to apply for an Area Approval from CASA.  We have created a web page for our clubs on 'How to Apply for / renew and Area Approvals' to clarify the requirements and help make the process a little easier.

Please share your learnings
Have you developed a policy, procedure that keeps your members safe and think it is worth sharing?  If so, we would love to hear from you.  Please send an email to secretary@maaq.org so it may be considered for inclusion in our next newsletter under our Safety topic.

2024 F4 Scale World Champs
Applications are now open for 2024 F4 Scale World Championships in Romania.  If you would like more information on this please see our website where Australian Scale Delegate, David Law, has provided further information.

Not a bad idea...
One of our clubs approached their local Member of Parliament and, on the basis of getting people back out into the fresh air after COVID, asked for the reimbursement of their members fees... and they were successful!!

We understand the club were reimbursed ALL of their members fees by their local MP... not a bad idea

Do you have a suggestion?
We are always looking at ways we can promote, help and support our sport while balancing the ever increasing regulations and rules as they evolve.  If you have any suggestions, topics or ideas that could be considered for inclusions in our newsletter please follow these guidelines and send it to our Public Relations Officer pro@maaq.org

Keep checking the MAAQ Events Website for the next up and coming event.  Make sure your clubs next event is listed in the Event Calendar.

Committee Profile -
Steve Lightowler, MAAQ SFI

My interest in model aircraft began at around 6 years old with my father who flew free flight in England.  After moving to Australia, I became interested in control line flying in Brisbane and subsequently became QLD Junior stunt champion. (p.s. there were only 3 entrants in the junior category).

I dropped off the radar for a while after discovering cars and girls but then found a radio control flying field at Pine Rivers (north of Brisbane) which later became SAAMBR.  I’ve been a member of SAAMBR since joining in 2006, becoming club Chief Flying Instructor (CFI) and have also taken on the role of State Flying Instructor (SFI) in QLD with MAAQ which entails processing of pilots wings and certificates and new and re-certified instructors.

Thanks Steve, you're doing a great job and we appreciate your efforts.

Get your Data Up to Date
The migration of all MAAA members to the new 'Member Jungle' membership platform is in its final stages of preparation and Go Live is currently forecast as 24th February, 2023.

Before the data is migrated it is important you ensure your information on the existing MAAA database is up to date.  Incorrect information may cause delays to the renewal of your membership.

You have till the end of January to check with your club Registrar/Secretary to ensure your personal contact information on the MAAA database is correct.
